Data File Definitions

The following data elements and field values are used in the data file (.xls) output for the Bloomington Campus Grade Distribution Reports for results subsequent to and including Fall 2004.

Data Column Explanation
INST This is the campus on which the course was offered. IUBLA is the code for IU Bloomington.
TERM Indicates the administrative grouping for classes and tuition generation, which is determined as an instructional accounting period. These terms coincide with semesters, i.e. fall term, spring term, summer term. The term code is comprised of a combination of century, year and academic term. Position 1 is the century, e.g. 4 = 2000s, 3 = 1900s; position 2 and 3 is the year, e.g. 10 = 2010, 09 = 2009; position 4 is the term, i.e. 8 = Fall, 5 = Summer, 2 = Spring.
CLASS # Course unique identifier.
ACAD ORG This code indicates the department that owns the course, for example BL‐AMID, BL‐MUS).
ACAD ORG DESC The description of ACAD ORG.
ACAD GRP The code referring to the School offering the course.
ACAD GRP DESC The description of the School offering the course.
SUBJECT Indicates the department offering the course and subject area (e.g. portion in bold here: MATH – M118).
COURSE The 3 digit number of a specific course often indicating the course level (e.g. portion in bold here: MATH –M 118).
TITLE Course title
TOPIC Topic of the course if the field is populated.
GRADEA+ This is the number of A+ grades awarded in this section.
GRADEA This is the number of A grades awarded.
GRADEA- This is the number of A- grades awarded.
GRADEB+ This is the number of B+ grades awarded.
GRADEB This is the number of B grades awarded.
GRADEB- This is the number of B- grades awarded.
GRADEC+ This is the number of C+ grades awarded.
GRADEC This is the number of C grades awarded.
GRADEC- This is the number of C- grades awarded.
GRADED+ This is the number of D+ grades awarded.
GRADED This is the number of D grades awarded.
GRADED- This is the number of D- grades awarded.
GRADEF This is the number of F grades awarded.
GRADEP This is the number of P grades awarded.
GRADES This is the number of S grades awarded.
GRADEI This is the number of I grades awarded.
GRADER This is the number of R grades awarded.
GRADEW This is the number of W grades awarded.
GRADENY This is the number of NY grades awarded.
GRADEWX This is the number of WX grades awarded.
GRADENC This is the number of NC grades awarded.
GRADENR This is the number of NR grades awarded.
GRADEOTHER This is the number of OTHER grades awarded.
GPAGRADES Total number of grades considered in computing grade point averages (A, B, C, D, F).
TOTALGRADES Total number of grades issued , including both GPA grades and non-GPA grades.
MAJORSPERCENT This is the percentage of students whose majors department matches the course department.
CLASSGPA The average of all GPA grades awarded, computed using the following values:
  • A+ = 4.0
  • A = 4.0
  • A- = 3.7
  • B+ = 3.3
  • B = 3.0
  • B- = 2.7
  • C+ = 2.3
  • C = 2.0
  • C- = 1.7
  • D+ = 1.3
  • D = 1.0
  • D- = 0.7
  • F = 0.0
The class GPA is calculated by totaling the credit points for all GPA grades awarded and by dividing by the total number of GPA grades. In compliance with privacy regulations, class GPA is not provided if fewer than five students are enrolled in the department, course or section, or if the GPA grades were awarded and fewer than five students received GPA grades. FN grades are classified as an F grade on these reports.
AVECUMGPA The average student GPA is calculated by averaging the academic records GPAs of all students enrolled. The GPA level used for each student is the student's current GPA level (undergraduate or graduate). Grades awarded this semester are included in the average student GPA calculation. In compliance with privacy regulations, the average student GPA is not provided if fewer than five students are enrolled, or if GPA grades were awarded and fewer than five students received GPA grades.
